GROSS ARNOLD (1929–2015), painter and graphic artist, worked from the 1960s to the 1990s in his small studio in Albertfalva, in Budapest’s 11th district. The defining works of his oeuvre were created here: countless etchings and the large-scale oil paintings that count among his principal works.
With the support of the Újbuda Patron (Újbudai Mecénás) program, a monographic study of the oeuvre and collection of the painter and graphic artist honored with the Artist of the Nation award is under way, in preparation for the 90th-anniversary retrospective exhibition to be held in December 2019. The current exhibition is organized around Gross’s reflections on art and his reverence for the artists he considered his masters — Kondor Béla, Jan van Eyck, J. S. Bach. The Gross Arnold Gallery presents the current state of the research, highlighting rare and special pieces of the oeuvre. At the opening, art historian Révész Emese will give participants a glimpse into the details of the monograph in progress. The following day, June 1, 2019, from 11 a.m., there will be an all-day painting and coloring workshop for young and old alike, featuring Gross Arnold’s intricate drawings.
The exhibition is part of the Bartók Béla Boulevard ELEVEN Spring and the Month of Graphic Arts program series.
The program is supported by the Municipality of Újbuda (11th District) and the Budapest Bank for Budapest Foundation.
