“Journeys to Real and Imaginary Landscapes” in Sofia

Share

Exhibition by graphic artist Arnold Gross – The exhibition opens to mark the 95th anniversary of the birth of Hungarian graphic artist and painter Arnold Gross.

Dates: November 20, 2025 – January 30, 2026

Venue: Liszt Institute, Sofia / 16 Akszakov St.

Arnold Gross (1929–2015) was a recipient of the Kossuth Prize and the title “Artist of the Nation,” whose works are known worldwide. Generations have grown up under the spell of his works: the rich world of his captivating etchings, rendered with meticulous detail, immediately captivates the viewer. Throughout his career, he revitalized the genres of aquatint and etching, and his distinctive coloring technique made his artistic vision truly unique. His artistic world is universal: his imagination naturally intertwines with images of landscapes and big cities. His works are imbued with nostalgia and the belief that the grayness of everyday life can always be overcome—through the joy of play and the exaltation of celebration.

Arnold Gross was born in 1929 in Torda, Romania, and spent his childhood in Oradea. The 95th anniversary of his birth was on January 22, 2024, while on January 22, 2025, we commemorated the 10th anniversary of his death. These significant anniversaries are marked by numerous exhibitions and commemorative programs—including this enchanting exhibition in Sofia—organized by the Gross Arnold Archive through the private initiative and support of the artist’s son, András Gross.

The exhibition is presented in collaboration with the Gross Arnold Archive.

The exhibition features the following thematic sections:
– Portraits, biography, introduction
– Homeland: Torda, Aranyosmellék, Transylvania
– Hungarian landscapes and cities
– Travels around the world
– Imaginary places, gardens, and cities
