The whole world has been turned upside down, and the Gross Arnold gallery café has also closed for an indefinite period. Tünde, our colleague, made it safely across the border to her family before the lockdown, we evacuated the finch from the shop window, everyone quietly headed home, and we locked the door. The excellent team is no longer behind the counter — Kata, our ever-cheerful, wonderful manager, and her delicious pastries — and we miss the familiar, well-known regulars at the tables and the gentle hum of our dear guests.
Left behind in the space on Bartók Béla út is the Gross world built up over more than five years of loving work and care — a world in which everyone who stepped inside found themselves in a truly homelike atmosphere. The wonderful pictures on the walls radiating peace and intimacy, the copies of the freshly published monograph. To us, this meant everything. We cannot know when or how life will return to its usual course — whether this will be only a temporary uncertainty, or whether our lives will change completely. The current situation, as with so many other sectors, is hitting the cultural sphere, the creative industries and hospitality hard, and no one can predict where the avalanche will stop or what further losses lie ahead. It is important that we stand together and think together, because the sustaining power of communities means the most!
For now the staff has gone on paid leave, and we too are trying somehow to stay on our feet, though this is rather difficult — a café doesn’t really work from home office, and we probably won’t be taking up coffee and pastry delivery either. But we believe that all the serenity, beauty, delicate sensitivity and cheerfulness that Gross Arnold’s art conveys is, and will be, needed under any circumstances, for
“There is so much trouble, worry, sorrow and horror surrounding us in the world that we must not let it into art as well!” professed Gross Arnold
